Goals of After School Rec Program

To offer a safe, friendly, fun, community oriented, active program for youth, after school until 6pm. Choose one or more days and have your child bused directly to Beekman Rec where in addition to outdoor fun, there is time for indoor games and free play!

Our staff are trained to empower youth through child guided imaginative play!

  • A caring environment: staff model, and children are guided, to be kind, considerate, caring and helpful
  • Personal responsibility: children are encouraged to care for their own belongings (with the guidance of caring staff) and control their own behavior
  • A balance of physical and quiet activity that meets the needs of each child
  • Outdoor activity: please have children bring clothes appropriate for outdoor play. Click here for more on “Why Be Out There?”, and click here to find out Why Dirt is Good for Kids.
  • Imaginative play: staff encourage children to guide their own play. For more on the importance of child guided imaginative play see this report by the AmericanAcademy of Pediatrics.
  • A recent study by Charles Hillman, published in Pediatrics, shows 7- to 9-year-old children who run around and play like, well, children, for at least 70 minutes a day show improved thinking skills, particularly in multitasking, compared to children who aren't as active.

Pick up From the After School Program
  • Children must be picked up at Rec Park by 6pm; there will be a late fee assessed to the family’s account when a child is not picked up by 6pm.
